The majority of our completed work. School buildings offer large simple roofs and substantial parking suitable for carports, and direct pay now makes district ownership viable where a power purchase agreement used to be the only route. Nine completed installations across the city.

Churches & faith communities

Congregations spend a meaningful share of their operating budget on utilities, and direct pay means roughly a third of a project's cost can return to them despite paying no federal tax. Most congregation rooftops fall well below the 1 MW threshold.

Nonprofits

The same funding position as schools and churches. For organisations where every dollar is allocated, converting a recurring utility cost into a fixed one has an effect beyond the saving itself.

Warehouses & distribution

Large flat roofs are the most cost-effective surface per watt available, and where refrigeration is involved the load shape is close to ideal — large, constant and daytime-weighted.

Offices & professional

Predictable daytime load, and single-storey buildings often carry more roof area than the load requires. Sizing to consumption rather than roof area matters here under NEM 3.0.

Industrial & manufacturing

Process loads that run through the working day, usually with the electrical service to support a substantial array. Compressed air, extraction and climate control all sit within generating hours.

Why direct pay matters so much here

San Diego has a great many institutional buildings with good roofs and no federal tax liability — school districts, congregations, nonprofits, public agencies. For years the federal credit was worth nothing to any of them.

Elective pay, commonly called direct pay, lets eligible tax-exempt and governmental organisations receive the value of that credit as a payment from the IRS rather than as an offset against tax owed.

That single change makes a large share of the city's best-suited rooftops financially viable for the first time. It is the most consequential development in commercial solar funding in recent years and it remains poorly understood by the organisations it most benefits.

Designing for NEM 3.0 and SDG&E rates

Anyone interconnecting since April 2023 falls under NEM 3.0, which substantially reduced compensation for exported energy. The design question is therefore how much of your generation you consume as you produce it.

For a school, that means sizing against term-time daytime load and thinking carefully about the summer holiday period. For a warehouse with refrigeration, it means the load is already well matched. For an office with evening cleaning and HVAC run-on, storage may carry more value than additional panels.

Section 48E provides a 30% federal credit on qualifying commercial solar, and facilities below 1 MW are exempt from prevailing-wage and apprenticeship requirements, so they reach the full rate automatically. Nothing here is tax advice — we work alongside your accountant.
