Commercial Solar for Vista Businesses

Vista's business park runs to roughly 14 million square feet and holds an unusual mix: medical device manufacturers, maritime and active-lifestyle companies, and one of the densest concentrations of craft breweries in the United States. Breweries in particular are among the best solar candidates we assess.

Why are Vista's breweries and manufacturers good candidates for solar?

Because both run heavy, continuous refrigeration and process loads during daylight hours. That means a very high share of what a rooftop array generates is consumed on site rather than exported at NEM 3.0's reduced rates — which is what determines whether commercial solar pays.

  • Vista has nearly 20 craft breweries and the most breweries per capita of any US city.
  • Brewing combines refrigeration, hot-side process load and packaging — large, daytime-weighted, and continuous.
  • The business park's roughly 14 million square feet is largely flat-roofed industrial, the cheapest surface to install on.
  • Systems below 1 MW receive the full 30% federal credit without prevailing-wage compliance.

Indigo Energy and Solar Inc provides commercial solar installation, battery storage and EV charging in Vista, California. Licensed electrical contractor, IBEW Local 569 signatory, with nine completed school installations across San Diego County ranging from 109.6 kW to 487.7 kW.

Vista's commercial base

Many of San Diego County's most prominent maritime, medical device and active-lifestyle companies operate from Vista's business park, alongside the brewing cluster that has become the city's signature.

Craft brewing

Vista sits at the centre of the region's 'Hops Highway' and has the most breweries per capita of any US city, with eight of the county's top thirty breweries by volume having a presence here. Brewing is close to an ideal solar load: glycol chilling and cold storage run continuously, the hot side runs on a daytime schedule, and packaging lines are daylight-weighted.

Medical device manufacturing

Vista hosts a significant cluster of medical device manufacturers. Clean rooms, controlled environments and precision equipment produce steady, non-negotiable loads through the working day, and energy is a permanent operating cost rather than a seasonal one.

Maritime & marine

Marine manufacturing and fabrication operate from the park. Fabrication load is daytime-weighted and often carries substantial compressed-air and extraction demand.

Sports & active lifestyle

Vista is home to several sports and active-lifestyle manufacturers. Production and warehousing combine large roof area with moderate load — often a good fit for a system sized to consumption with the surplus stored.

Electronics & fabrication

Electronics assemblers, printed circuit board manufacturers and specialty fabricators operate along Business Park Drive and Hacienda Drive. Process-controlled environments again produce a favourable, daytime-weighted load shape.

Taprooms & hospitality

The brewery taprooms bring an evening load on top of the daytime process load. That combination is where paired battery storage earns its cost, by moving daytime generation into the evening rate period.

01

Why brewing is the strongest case we see

A brewery is unusual in carrying two large loads with different shapes at once. Glycol chilling and cold storage run essentially continuously; brewing, cleaning and packaging run on a daytime schedule.

Under NEM 3.0 the value of solar comes from self-consumption rather than export, and a brewery consumes almost everything a rooftop array can produce during generating hours. There is very little surplus to sell back cheaply.

Add a taproom and the load extends into the evening, which is when SDG&E rates are highest. That is the specific case where storage stops being optional and starts being the point.

What we look at on a Vista industrial building

The business park's building stock is largely flat-roofed industrial, which keeps installation cost per watt down, but the details still vary building to building.

  • Roof condition and remaining life — installing over a roof due for replacement means paying to remove and refit the array.
  • Structural capacity, particularly on older tilt-up construction.
  • Electrical service and switchgear space, which on a brewery is often already close to capacity.
  • Whether existing refrigeration plant shades the best roof plane.
  • Whether a carport array over parking makes more sense than competing with rooftop equipment.
03

The federal credit for Vista businesses

Section 48E provides a 30% federal credit on qualifying commercial solar, and facilities below 1 MW are exempt from prevailing-wage and apprenticeship requirements, so they reach the full rate automatically. Nothing here is tax advice — we work alongside your accountant.

Most Vista brewery and manufacturing installations sit comfortably below 1 MW, so the full 30% applies with no labour-compliance requirement attached.

If your business is structured such that federal tax liability is limited, that changes which financing structure makes sense rather than ruling solar out — worth modelling ownership against a lease before deciding.

Commercial Solar in Vista: Common Questions

It is one of the best commercial fits we assess. Glycol chilling and cold storage run continuously and the hot side runs during the day, so almost everything a rooftop array generates is used on site rather than exported at reduced NEM 3.0 rates.

It strengthens the case for battery storage. The taproom load falls in SDG&E's most expensive rate period, and storage lets you cover it with daytime generation instead of buying at peak.

It is a common finding on breweries and it is worth establishing early, because a service upgrade can be a significant cost. We check it during assessment rather than discovering it during design.

Then usable roof area is smaller than gross roof area, and plant can shade the best planes. Where that limits the array we look at carport structures over parking as an alternative.

The installation itself is on the roof, so the controlled environment below is generally unaffected. The moments to schedule carefully are the electrical tie-in and the interconnection, both of which are short.

Only at 1 MW and above. Below that the facility is exempt and receives the full 30% federal credit automatically, which covers essentially every building in the Vista Business Park.
